Pick the sleeping spot and the basics the puppy will need on day one.

• Choose the sleeping spot (a crate or a pen) and decide where it will live for the first month.
• Buy food and water bowls, a collar, a leash and an ID tag with your phone number on it.

Training, potty plan and the layout of the first days.

• Research a positive-reinforcement puppy class or trainer and note the next start date.
• Plan potty breaks and the routes near home; note grassy spots, stairs and hazards.
• Choose bedding with a washable cover for the crate or pen.

Cleaning kit, first toys and where food and water will live.

• Assemble the cleaning kit: enzyme cleaner, paper towels, old cloths, stain remover.
• Buy the first set of safe chew toys with no small parts; skip rope toys that would be left unsupervised.
• Decide where food and water bowls will live, away from the litter box if a resident cat is around.

Health schedule and the ride home.

• Book vaccinations and deworming through your vet and follow their schedule, not a generic one.
• Get the carrier or crate the puppy will travel home in and leave it open with a towel inside.
• Do short, calm practice car rides if the puppy is already with you, always secured, never loose.

Food, safety sweep and the first-aid kit.

• Buy the food the puppy is eating now plus the food you plan to transition to.
• Do the room-by-room safety sweep: cables, small objects, cleaning products, toxic plants (see the puppy-proofing guide).
• Put together the first-aid kit and confirm its contents with your vet at the first visit.

Confirm the logistics and prepare one quiet room.

• Confirm the pickup date, time and route; plan for weather and a long ride home.
• Prepare one quiet room with the crate, bed, water and potty pads for the first night.
• Book time off work for the first days, if you can.
• Register the microchip details once you have the puppy’s chip number.

Final shopping, the vet appointment and the household briefing.

• Do the final shopping run: food, bowls, crate, bed, leash, harness, potty pads, cleaning kit.
• Confirm the first-week vet appointment.
• Brief the whole household on the arrival plan: one calm person at a time, no crowds.
• Leave a welcome kit by the door: towel, water bowl, potty pads, a chew.

Keep the first hours calm, quiet and low-key.

• Keep the ride home calm: carrier secured, no loud greetings, frequent quiet reassurance.
• Let the puppy explore one quiet room first, then the rest of the home under supervision.
• Offer water and the same food it was eating; keep portions small on the first day.
• Keep the booked vet appointment even if the puppy seems perfectly fine.
• Protect nap time, the first day should be short on adventures and long on rest.
